‘Looking out, Looking in’ – a new mural installation at Camberwell Place
Camberwell Place has commissioned an inspiring, hopeful and smile-inducing mural by Melbourne-based artist Carla McRae.
Carla McRae is an independent artist and illustrator based in Collingwood. Known for her bright and playful pieces, her unique works have been featured into many different types of projects, from editorial, publishing and apparel to gallery installations and large-scale murals.
In her mural for Camberwell Place’s 791 Laneway called “Looking out, Looking in” the piece is inspired by the leafy, tranquil streets and parks of the Camberwell and Boroondara area. The composition comprises native flora and fauna common to the locale rendered down to colourful, abstracted forms.
A Painted Lady Butterfly bounces between Everlasting Daisies, and a New Holland Honeyeater reaches over a branch of Hickory Wattle to feed from a Fuchsia flower. Glimpses at a figure can be seen, moving through and connecting with the drifting, natural forms; a hand on a leaf, a moment with a bird, pausing to take it all in. Like a garden, the mural aims to provide a relaxing and energising space to rest and reflect.
